Our first Evaluation Contest
On October 29, 2022, some members participated in the Area F-3 Evaluation Contest. Maya competed as a contestant in the Evaluation Contest (English) and Mariko competed in the 論評コンテスト (Japanese Evaluation Contest) representing Senri Toastmasters Club that she also belongs. Other participating members included Yuki (serving as a counter) and Luting (serving as a timer). It was unfortunate that Mit had to cancel his participation as a contestant for family reasons, those members mentioned above and some others participating as an anonymous judge and audience members had fun learning the art of speech evaluation.

Maya, a contestant, who placed third in the contest:
It was a great opportunity for me to participate in the area contest. I learned a lot about the way to give an evaluation speech and how to organize an event. I learned a lot not only on the day of the contest but also in the process of preparing for the contest, especially at the practice session we held on Oct. 11.
Luting, timer:
I volunteered because I was not satisfied with my performance serving as a Timer at one of our meetings, and wanted to give it a try again. I never knew that the area contest was so big an event. We didn't have one timer, but three. What I found difficult was clearly understanding what my role was. I needed to understand not just my role but the whole picture. I learned that when serving for a big event like this, it is important to prepare well, serve with responsibility, and communicate well with others.
Future contests
The next round of contests is the Division F Evaluation Contest, to be held on November 23, which is contested by the first-place winners from each Area, Area F-1 through Area F-6.
Toastmasters will have another series of speech contests, the International Speech Contest, starting at the club level in January/February, moving up through the area, division, and district levels, and culminating in the World Championship of Public Speaking held at the International Convention to be held in August.
We hope we can learn many tips for delivering a great speech in those contests.
