Trying new things and overcoming challenges
This meeting was unique in that some members tried new things and overcame challenges.
First of all, Miyu, the newest member, delivered her first speech in Toastmasters. Ayako, the second-newest member, served as Topicsmaster, the facilitator of the Table Topics Session, where we practice impromptu speeches. Caliph, one of the founders, served as Ah-Counter, who pays attention to the speakers' filler words and unnecessary sounds, made his report in a very new way. Yet, that is not all. As shown in the photo, Mariko, an experienced member with over six years and a half of experience in Toastmasters, delivered a speech using her piano. She spoke about why she recommends acoustic pianos over digital pianos whenever your circumstances allow. She demonstrated some aspects that only acoustic pianos have and it was truly convincing.
Some members overcame challenges. Maya, who talked about the value of learning languages other than our first one, had gone through a really tough time putting together her thoughts to craft this speech. She was unable to come up with an idea to put things in a sensible order to communicate her message. She was unable to upload her speech information onto easy-Speak, the website we use in arranging things about our meetings. She almost reached out to Vice President Education Hideo to cancel her speech. She didn't. She pulled through. She somehow crafted her speech, practiced it, and delivered it at the meeting. Congratulations! In Toastmasters, it is okay to screw up. it didn't really hurt if she canceled her speech. But in life, when you are asked to speak and you accept it, it is now your responsibility to show up. It must have been a precious experience to go through this struggle of finding the right way to put her materials in place.
Another member, Luting, had a totally different challenge. She went to the wrong place, KOKO PLAZA, thinking we were having a hybrid meeting. To make matters worse, she was to deliver a speech. If you are a minor role-taker, you can log in using your smartphone and present your report briefly, but she was supposed to deliver a 5- to 7-minute speech! She didn't have time to go home and she could have canceled her speech. She didn't, either. She looked around the venue and somehow found a place that is quiet enough that is properly lit. She delivered her speech with a significant message.
Trying new things and overcoming challenges. These are some of the many things we can experience to be a better version of ourselves here at Shin-Osaka Leaders.
