The Fourth Ice Breaker speech
In this meeting, one of the founders, Maho, delivered her fourth Ice Breaker speech, which is what a member delivers when they join Toastmasters to introduce themselves.
Why, then, did she deliver one after being a Toastmaster for over seven years? It is because she has started working on a new Path, or a course, in our education program, Pathways. Yes, we are supposed to repeat the basics when starting a new path. Some people in other clubs do not really appreciate this requirement, but here in Shin-Osaka Leaders, members see it as a great opportunity to review the basics. There are four projects in the first level, namely, Ice Breaker, Writing a Speech with Purpose, Introduction to Vocal Variety and Body Language, and Evaluation and Feedback. They are all worth repeating.
This time, Maho took an intriguing approach. She introduced herself as a device with a "user's manual" that she created. It added humor to the speech and covered lots of different aspects of her personality. Considering that the purpose of an introduction is to make a lasting impression so that listeners remember what we say about ourselves, her approach proved successful.
We look forward to hearing her next speeches in Level 1 as she revisits these important points about public speaking: how to organize a speech with a clear speech purpose in mind and eliminating anything that does not support that purpose, how to convey our message more effectively by using different techniques of vocal variety and body language, and how to be open to constructive criticism and suggestions from our peers.
