Three Prepared Speeches with Six Members Attending!?

This was a busy, vibrant, and Jubilant meeting, with six members in attendance taking multiple roles. Mariko served as the Toastmaster of the Day, the facilitator of the education portion of the meeting, and as a speaker. Hideo doubled as the "General Evaluator," who evaluates the entire meeting, "Mute Manager," the speaker monitor operator, and the Zoom host. Junko served as a speaker and the Ah-Counter, who helps participants reduce the number of their crutch words. Finally, So served as a speaker and the Topicsmaster, who facilitates the Table Topics Session for impromptu speech practice.

Toastmasters Community

With those members serving in multiple roles, we still couldn't have held this meeting without outside support. We were glad to welcome three Toastmasters guests to help us run a quality meeting. Michiko of the Osaka Sunshine Toastmasters Club helped us as the Grammarian and set "Jubilant" as the Word of the Day. Hiroko of the Sakurazaka Toastmasters Club helped us as the Timer. Satsuki of the Naniwa Toastmasters Club served as an evaluator to provide fresh perspectives to the second speaker, Junko. We really appreciate their support and the Toastmasters community that makes such arrangements possible.

The Evaluation and Feedback project

The first speaker, So, worked on the "Evaluation and Feedback" project and delivered a new speech incorporating the feedback he received for his previous speech. His evaluator, Maho, was pleasantly surprised because he tactfully incorporated her suggestions into this speech. This was a great example of how we learn at Toastmasters, where there is no one with authority like a teacher or an instructor. We build our skills through experiential learning and peer feedback. First, we learn on an online platform called Base Camp, where we can read what we need to know to build a certain set of skills tied to a project's purpose. Base Camp may have interactive quizzes and/or surveys as well as videos. We then craft and deliver a speech at a club meeting, where the speech is evaluated by a peer. We listen to their feedback and suggestions for improvement and try to incorporate them in future speeches.

If you are interested in Experiential Learning and Peer Feedback in a jubilant atmosphere, visit us and see it for yourself!
