The Last Meeting of the Program Year
This was the last meeting of the program year, which starts on July 1 and ends on June 30 the following year. With the program year coming to the end, we discharged the seven club officers, who have been leading the club over the past year, just before the installation ceremony for the incoming officers. At the end of the installation ceremony, Yuki, the new president, delivered an emotional speech, thanking the outgoing officers and calling on members to work together to make the club even better a vehicle for all of us to use and hone our skills. We look forward to the year to come.
Preceding the installation ceremony, we held a slightly shorter version of our regular program with two prepared speeches, Table Topics (Impromptu speech) session, and three evaluation speeches. The reason we had more evaluation speeches than prepared speeches was the first evaluator was working on a project called "Evaluation and Feedback." This is a project of much significance because it deals with peer feedback, one of the four principles of Toastmasters' education program. In Toastmasters, we do not have a teacher or instructor. Instead, members provide evaluation and feedback to one another, and we try to incorporate the feedback received in our next projects. The first evaluator provided her feedback to the first speaker and later received feedback from her peer member about her evaluation speech.
Which do you think you have more opportunities, to deliver a speech or to provide feedback to others? Obviously, the latter is far more frequent. Toastmasters is a place you can practice providing feedback in a nice manner so that whatever you say will be listened to and appreciated. If you're interested in improving your skills in providing feedback, give us a visit and see for yourself what we do to hone our feedback skills!
