Toastmasters Speech Contest
The first-ever Shin-Osaka Leaders Toastmasters Club International Speech Contest took place on February 6, 2024. What is the International Speech Contest? It's one of the speech contests Toastmasters International officially recognizes, to be run by strictly following the rules stipulated in the "Speech Contest Rulebook."
There are five contest types, the International Speech Contest, Humorous Speech Contest, Tall Tales Contest, Evaluation Contest, and Table Topics Contest. Every Toastmasters speech contest starts at the Club level and moves on to the Area, Division, and District levels. For your information, Shin-Osaka Leaders belong to Area C4, in Division C, which includes 25 clubs in Kansai, Tottori, and Fukui. In Japan, all the clubs belong to the same District, District 76. While the other contests end there, the International Speech Contest winners will proceed to the Region, Semi-Final, and the final levels.
Our first-ever Speech Contest
Though speech contests start at the club level, clubs are permitted to choose any method of selecting the members to compete at the next level. In other words, clubs do not have to conduct a contest to send their representatives to compete in the Area Contests. Therefore, at Shin-Osaka Leaders, we have selected our representative by a slightly different form of contest, a "Speech Competition" to allow some members who did not meet the eligibility requirement to experience speaking in a competitive environment.
Since we have more eligible contestants this year, the officers decided to hold our first-ever Speech Contest. Some members worked hard guided by the Vice President of Education and made the contest a huge success. Their thorough preparation made the contest flow flawlessly and the speeches delivered were all of high quality. The topics of the speeches varied from encouraging us to embrace our true selves and reminding us of the importance of perseverance, to suggesting starting early and making adjustments, to seeing people as individuals without judging them with stereotypical biases. Some Toastmasters guests at the venue were impressed by the quality of the contest. The winners of the contest will proceed to the Area Contests, and we will definitely root for them.
