Table TOPICS session
The second session in our meeting is the Table Topics Session, where members practice impromptu speaking.
In our meetings, as in other clubs' meetings, it is common that the topics provided during this session take the form of questions. This is not bad at all in itself, but those topics tend to limit the content of the speeches. People tend to simply answer the question, rather than make a speech about the topic. The purpose of a speech is to make a change in the auidence by saying something meaningful. The change can be related to actions, ways of thinking, or the amount of knowledge. Therefore, simply answering a question is not considered an effective speech.
In Shin-Osaka Leaders, some Topicsmasters, the person to facilitate the session by providing topics and calling on members to speak on the topics, have been trying to break that old habit. The latest of them was Tonette, who served as the Topicsmaster at this meeting. The topics she provided included:
Pick a word, remember an old memory you have experienced, and share a word.
Picnic
Communty Service
Valentine's Day
Halloween
Pilgrimage
These topics forced the speakers to try to share a story and make a contribution to the audience.
It is highly expected that every Topicsmaster remember the purpose of the Table Topics Session and provide thought-provoking topics like these.
